YouTube – Settings for Parents

One of the more common (and understandable) concerns from parents is to do with the lack of YouTube parents settings, in other words settings which will allow parents a greater degree of control of what their children can or cannot see.

Historically the only available setting was ‘Restricted Mode’ which is essentially an 18+ filter to hide potentially mature content such as sex, violence and bad language appearing in search results.

Restricted Mode is okay, it’s better than nothing. As you would probably expect it isn’t human moderators who make the decision, it’s artificial intelligence, so the experience can be hit and miss. But over the last few years Google has been offering parents a greater degree of control on YouTube and YouTube Kids with some additional settings. These are:

YouTube Supervised Experience – this is for the main YouTube app, predominantly it’s for children under 13 and bridges the gap between a YouTube Kids account and a full account. With a Supervised account parents can select a content setting that limits the videos and music that children under the age of 13 can find and play. Also, lots of features are turned off by default such as live chat, comments, creating posts, video uploads and much more.

Click here to see a full list of features turned off in a YouTube Supervised account.

There’s also a brand new feature: YouTube Supervised accounts can now be activated on a parents device – this means that if your child uses YouTube on your phone/tablet you can set up an account for your child on your device and restrict what they see.

YouTube Kids Parent Allowlisting – also know as ‘Approved Content Only’, as the name suggests this is for the YouTube Kids app and allows parents to handpick every video, channel or collection of channels your child is allowed to watch. The search function is also disabled.

Importantly, one of the biggest concerns from parents is that they want their child to stay within the safer, more moderated environment of YouTube Kids, but the types of videos their child likes to watch aren’t available. With YouTube Kids Parent Allowlisting enabled you can ‘Allowlist’ content from the main YouTube to the child’s YouTube Kids account.

All of these features are really easy to set up and use. To help you with this I have linked 4 videos below which explain the features and show you how to use them.
