SEND – Using AI to Power EHCP’s Artificial Intelligence is finding its way into everything, and where it can save time and do a good job I think there can be enormous benefit. Something that caught my attention last week was an article on the use of AI for EHCP’s. An interesting one given the significant concerns around model training (data protection), hallucinations, guardrails and more. But unsurprisingly many companies are seeing a niche, offering AI services to local authority SEND services specifically to draft EHCP’s. The article writer, Matt Keer, spoke to some of the tech suppliers and says that what he found is encouraging. The article includes questions such as:
Whilst the article is aimed at a local authority perspective I think it’s an interesting read to see how things are developing. You can find the article HERE. Free Resource (KS3) – CEOP Online Blackmail This brand new, free resource from CEOP features a set of 3 lesson plans and situational films to help young people develop their understanding two types of blackmail: financially motivated and coercion for images. You can download the resource HERE. Free Resource (KS2) – AI Literacy Lessons This new, free resource is from Sphinx AI. It is a free scheme of work on AI literacy by teachers, for teachers. Topics include: understanding AI, GenAI, ethics, bias and more. You can download the resource HERE. The Problem with Boys? This is an article from Stephen Hall in relation to the drama series Adolescence, Incel culture, the manosphere and algorithms. The latter, algorithms, is a subject I speak a lot about with children and young people, as far as I’m concerned it is one of the most important aspects to understand about modern-day online life as algorithms are potentially a gateway to so much harm, creating filter bubbles or echo chambers and distorting beliefs or reality. The article states quote “High profile TV dramas can spark debate, but debate without depth risks deepening stigma” unquote. If we are to educate our young people we need to know the facts, not the dramatisation. It’s a really interesting article which you can find HERE (note: this is a LinkedIn article) and it also points to some some research from Dublin City University HERE and a Problem with Boys report HERE. Resource for Higher Education – Financially Motivated Sexual Extortion I’m sure we’re all aware by now that FMSE is on the rise. The main target age seems to be 16+, but it is also known to be occurring for young people 11+ as well. A new resource has been created specifically for 18+ which includes a poster and some student guidance which you can find HERE. The Rise of the Student HackerDid you know that over half (57%) of the hacks/data breaches in school were carried out by students? I didn’t realise it was this high, but according to analysis from the ICO that appears to be the case, with nearly a third of those coming from stolen or guessed login details. It’s easy to think that hacking is an outsider threat, some unknown bad actor trying to get into the systems to cause damage (e.g. blackmail), but much of the threat is internal, compounded by weak processes and safeguards. There is an informative article on Techradar giving an insight into some of the issues, which may provide some thoughts and ideas to check your own systems. You can find the article HERE. For Parents – Managing In-Game Spending In-game spending can be problematic with some children and young people. The urgency to level up, to look unique, to be better than your friends, and to top all this off the persuasive techniques that games companies use. Internet Matters have an excellent guide for parents which includes:
