Watchover Wednesday – a new internet safety risk?

What is Watchover Wednesday?  Have a look HERE, basically it is a new trend by mainly young girls posting YouTube videos and asking, “Am I pretty?”.

Am I concerned about it?  Yes, definitely!  Is it anything new?  No, it isn’t!  Of course all young girls want to be pretty, and want everyone else to think they are pretty.  Technology and the internet in particular simply allows for a far easier and greater reach.

There are two ways of looking at this:

First of all, this is going to start panic-mania again –
No more computer in the bedroom No more mobile phone
No more television in the bedroom
Total monitoring of all online activity, SWAT team optional.

Secondly, there is the common sense way –
This is nothing new; the internet simply allows for a much larger audience , albeit one where there are risks which should never be overlooked.

The advice I always give is no different.  Parents, you need to talk to your children.  Here are the 6 most important tips for parents (in my opinion):

6.  Try to understand the technology so you can talk in an informed manner with your child
5.  Understand how your children are interacting on the internet, using what – talk to them!
4.  Tell children that people may not be who they seem, if not sure ask
3.  Talk to children about what personal information is, what they can and cannot give out
2.  Learn how to use security settings within I.E., Playstation etc for assurance
1.  Most important of all – engage, learn, enjoy, use common sense. If in doubt, shout!
